Orthodontic Emergency Q&A

How do you know if you’re having an Orthodontic emergency?

While annoying, a wire that is sticking you is probably not an Orthodontic emergency. “Breaking a bracket” or having a part of your appliance become loose or unbonded isn’t considered an emergency either. Emergencies are events that require you to be seen right away and can’t wait until the next business day.

Ortho emergences that qualify for immediate action might include having some kind of accident that causes your mouth to have excessive bleeding, broken or knocked out teeth, a broken jaw, or other mouth or facial injuries that require Dr. Condie to take immediate action.

What do you do if you’re having an Orthodontic emergency?

If you’re experiencing an emergency that’s life threatening, please call 911. Otherwise, if you’re having an Orthodontic emergency, call the office at (509) 837-7933.

Call the office at the first sign that something is wrong during business hours and on weekends.  Follow the automated prompts that tell you what to do in an emergency. You’ll then be directed to call the emergency phone line, where someone from the Sunny Smile Orthodontics staff answers your call, and can tell you what actions to take.

If you’re not sure if you’re having an emergency, you can certainly call and leave a message on the emergency phone line. When the staff member returns your call, discuss your problem and they can inform you if your situation is an emergency.

What sorts of things aren’t Orthodontic emergencies?

Braces can be uncomfortable at times, but just because you’re in discomfort doesn’t always mean it’s an emergency. If a bracket becomes loose or even falls off, you likely can wait until the next day to get it repaired. Just make sure you don’t swallow any loose parts.

If a wire is poking the inside of your cheek, cover it with wax until you can be seen. If something is stuck in your braces or you have mouth sores, irritated lips, or cheeks, talk with Dr. Condie during regular office hours. His caring team is happy to schedule you an appointment to help resolve the issue.
